WHAT IS STEM CELL THERAPY?

Stem cell therapy is a one-time procedure for the treatment of arthritis. It uses stem cells harvested from the animals own body, so there is no chance of rejection. These stem cells are then injected into the affected joints to provide long term anti-inflammatory relief. The aim is to eliminate the need for ongoing supplements, injections or medication.

WHAT IS INVOLVED IN STEM CELL THERAPY?

Stem cell therapy is done as a day procedure. The patient is put under anaesthetic to perform radiographs to assess the affected joints

Under the same anaesthetic, surgery is performed to harvest the fat from the chest area. The surgical site is sutured closed and a drain is placed to prevent excess fluid build up. The pet is then woken from anaesthetic.

The stem cells are processed in a purpose built laboratory

The stem cells are processed in a sterile manner. The veterinarian is scrubbed in, with mask, cap, gown and sterile gloves. The processing occurs under a sterile hood to prevent contamination. This is the only in house stem cell processing lab in QLD

The pet is then anaethetised again and the stem cells are injected into the affected joints.

The patient stays overnight for observation and then goes home on antibiotics with a tailored physiotherapy plan. There is a drain in the chest wound that requires removal in 3 days and stitches require removal in 10 - 12 days. Patients may be initially more lame after the anaesthetic, but improvement is usually seen within the next 4 weeks

THE PRICE OF STEM CELL THERAPY INCLUDES:

  • Neurological and musculoskeletal exam
  • Pre-anaesthetic blood work
  • Radiographs
  • Anaesthetics and monitoring
  • Intravenous fluids
  • Stem cell harvesting
  • Stem cell processing
  • Stem cell injections into joints

IS STEM CELL THERAPY COVERED BY PET HEALTH INSURANCE?

As Stem Cell Therapy is a new and emerging field, it is not yet covered by pet insurance. However, depending on your level of cover, pre-anaesthetic blood work, anaesthesia and radiographs to assess the extent of the arthritis may be covered under some pet health insurance plans
